The morning of surgery, I stayed in bed for extra The morning of surgery, I stayed in bed for extra snuggles from Tom. Before I got up, I also listened to the Welcoming Prayer. Then I got out took my HibiClens shower and drank that nasty pre-surgery carb drink, all the while listening to Wonder by Natalie Merchant on repeat. Mixed in with a little “yeet the teat” chanting from @kellystanze. We made it to the hospital, took a couple wrong turns and ended up at the station of a receptionist who had an axolotl on her desk and so very kindly checked me in, pointed us in the correct direction, and sent me with a good luck turtle. Once I was back in pre-op meeting the team, I asked if they could play Wonder while they were putting me under. When my wonderful surgeon asked how I was, I said, “I’m ready to rock this!” And I meant it. I got hugs from my entourage before they wheeled me back. They put on Wonder and two minutes later I was in post-op waking up. Or at least that’s what it felt like, even if it was closer to 6 hours later. Coming out of anesthesia was a little rough plus my wound vac wasn’t cooperating, so we stayed over night. But yesterday and today I’ve felt really pretty good - mentally, physically, and emotionally. THANK YOU again for all the prayers, support, and well wishes!
How are you really? After I posted my update the How are you really? After I posted my update the other day about surgery dates and such, the one where I said I honestly felt good, I had a few friends reach out and ask me how I was feeling really. And I’m honestly in a better place emotionally than I’ve been in a really long time, maybe my whole life. Now, that doesn’t mean I’m happy and never sad or angry or any of the other emotions we humans have been taught to keep hidden. No. I’m feeling good because I’m actually feeling. I’m no longer interested in being happy, but not too happy, and never sad or angry. That’s not for me anymore. I’m here for all the emotions, feeling them as they come, attending, befriending, and surrendering to what they have to teach me. This isn’t to say that I woke up one day and just decided this was what I was going to do. Not at all. It’s taken a lot of reflection, inner work, and self care. Here’s what I’ve been doing most recently… Guidance + brainspotting sessions with @jadadobeshhealingco Welcoming Prayer read by Rev. Joe Stabile (his voice is amazing) Safe and Sound Protocol with @kellygreene.me Journaling Listening to my body and stepping into the T God made me to be So, when I say I’m “good,” I’m honestly good, but not in the way we typically think of “good.” I’m holistically good, which means I feel and emote as needed, no matter the emotion. My biggest fear going into this season - it had no My biggest fear going into this season - it had nothing to do with plucking the cancer out of the soil in which it grew. My biggest fear was that I would be forced out of the work that I love. That when my people who see me for one-on-one guidance or in the Collective would fire me. That they wouldn’t want to burden me while I’m navigating this season. And the thought of not doing this work made me so afraid because this work - sitting with my people in whatever they bring, helping them heal and break the cycles that have been with them for generations - fills me with life. I was made for this work, and the thought that it could be gone just because I grew a cancer was absolutely terrifying. I brought my fear to @jadadobeshhealingco, whom I see for inner work guidance, and do you know what she said to me? She said, “Cancer is not a threat to your capabilities.” I wrote that down exchanging “your” for “my” and stuck it right next to my computer on my desk, so it was at the ready if and when that fear crept up. The moral of this story is I’m here, and if you’ve hesitated to share something with me or schedule a call with me because of what I’ve got going on, that is unnecessary and I want you to stop that right now. And one day I’m going to figure out how to mic us up, so we can record and share on the cast-pod, but for now we have episode 68.
