Have you ever cleaned your kid’s room or your shop, thinking it will be a fairly straightforward task? Like you go in and plan to get it cleaned up in no time, BUT it ends up being way more overwhelming and stressful than you thought?

Well, processing your emotions is a LOT like this! It’s never a quick or easy task – especially when you’ve been holding your feelings and emotions in for a long time.

In today’s episode, I’m talking about cleaning the shop and why feeling your feelings gets worse before it gets better. Many of us have been little hoardy hoarders with our feelings for years. When you finally decide it’s time to start the process of working through your emotions, not only are you feeling your emotions in the moment, but you’re also unpacking YEARS of emotions!

Just like all the stuff that piles up in your shop or barn can get messy, your emotions can, too. Sorting through your emotions can feel really chaotic and uncomfortable because it forces you to confront what you’ve been avoiding. But this is the only way to truly clear everything out. It’s not a smooth or pretty process, but it’s absolutely necessary!

It’s important to start small when you’re going through this process – trying to tackle all of your emotions at once will be way too overwhelming. Take some time to ground yourself, and find someone who is a safe space to confide in when this feels like too much.

The key is to stay present when you’re working through the hard. Please know that it won’t feel hard and uncomfortable forever, but you’ve got to stick with it!

Feeling your feelings is NOT easy – especially if it’s something you’ve never done before. Just like cleaning up your kids’ playroom or your shop, it feels frustrating and draining, and it gets worse before it gets better.

Fortunately, the clarity and peace you find on the other side will be SO worth it. I’ve experienced this in my own life, and I know it’s possible for you, too!

In this episode, Cleaning the Shop: Why Feeling Your Feelings Gets Worse Before It Gets Better, I cover:

  • What happens when you stop feeling your feelings + what it’s like when you DO
  • Starting small when processing your emotions vs. tackling them all at once
  • How to ground yourself as you work through this process
  • What it feels like when you finally process your feelings & emotions in the moment
  • How you can support others who are just starting this process

More about the Good Movement Draws Good Movement podcast:

In stockmanship (the art and science of handling cattle in a safe, effective, low-stress manner), we have this phrase . . . good movement draws good movement.

It’s this thing that happens when we ask a small group of cattle, maybe a cow, or a pair to move out in a certain direction and their movement draws the whole herd into moving in the same direction.

Good movement happens when we approach the cattle with a positive attitude, read and really listen to what they’re telling us, and communicate accordingly.

We don’t approach the aware, flighty cattle the same as we do the tame, docile cattle. We adjust ourselves, our energy, and approach, and communicate with each differently.

These adjustments help us effectively draw good movement from each, which then draws good movement from the herd. But it starts with us.

The same is true for humans. Good movement starts with us.

Welcome to Good Movement Draws Good Movement, the podcast where farmers, ranchers, and rural folks can grow relationally through awareness, understanding, and effective communication.

Hey, it’s me – T. I’m your host, and I, along with my guests, will be covering topics related to drawing good movement – things like self and social awareness, brain science, positive psychology, extending grace, and so much more.

We’ll share tools that can help you understand why you are the way you are, why others are the way they are, and how you can use that to step out of self-told lies with grace and compassion to draw good movement in conversations, relationships, and life in rural America.

Tune in every Tuesday and make sure to hit subscribe so you never miss an episode! Let’s go draw good movement!
