Last fall, I got bucked off a horse for the very first time. Now, Tom might tell you I didn’t actually get bucked off because I bailed off (which is partially true).
The main reason I ended up in this situation was because I was ignoring the horse and the signals he was sending me. He had ZERO clue what I was asking him to do. But I continued pushing him, which led to me being forcibly dismounted and landing on my butt!
Ignoring signals from your horses and livestock (like I did in this circumstance) causes disconnection and even danger. I’m betting you’ve experienced something similar with your body and emotions!
In today’s episode, I’m talking about why emotions aren’t the problem – avoiding them is. Emotions are meant to help, guide, and connect you. They’re not an inconvenience (contrary to what you may believe), but are actually a BEAUTIFUL part of our design as humans!
Emotions can help with alerting you when something matters, is meaningful, or even when something is off (i.e. physical pain). Continually suppressing your emotions and not allowing yourself to be vulnerable (like I used to do) will only lead to long-term struggles.
I know that feeling and connecting with your emotions can sound scary, but it is VITAL if you want to experience lasting healing in your life!
Ultimately, emotions aren’t the problem, but avoiding them IS. I would love for you to take some time and think about what emotions you’ve been ignoring or labeling as bad. Your emotions are meant to help, guide, and connect you, so I hope you allow them to do that!
In this episode, Emotions Aren’t the Problem – Avoiding Them Is, I cover:
- Why emotions aren’t the problem but are actually meant to help & guide you
- Understanding that vulnerability deepens connection
- What happens when you continually shove your emotions down
- How to begin letting your emotions be your guide vs. a challenge to overcome

More about the Good Movement Draws Good Movement podcast:
In stockmanship (the art and science of handling cattle in a safe, effective, low-stress manner), we have this phrase . . . good movement draws good movement.
It’s this thing that happens when we ask a small group of cattle, maybe a cow, or a pair to move out in a certain direction and their movement draws the whole herd into moving in the same direction.
Good movement happens when we approach the cattle with a positive attitude, read and really listen to what they’re telling us, and communicate accordingly.
We don’t approach the aware, flighty cattle the same as we do the tame, docile cattle. We adjust ourselves, our energy, and approach, and communicate with each differently.
These adjustments help us effectively draw good movement from each, which then draws good movement from the herd. But it starts with us.
The same is true for humans. Good movement starts with us.
Welcome to Good Movement Draws Good Movement, the podcast where farmers, ranchers, and rural folks can grow relationally through awareness, understanding, and effective communication.
Hey, it’s me – T. I’m your host, and I, along with my guests, will be covering topics related to drawing good movement – things like self and social awareness, brain science, positive psychology, extending grace, and so much more.
We’ll share tools that can help you understand why you are the way you are, why others are the way they are, and how you can use that to step out of self-told lies with grace and compassion to draw good movement in conversations, relationships, and life in rural America.
