I’m excited to welcome a special guest, Kourtney Talkington, onto the podcast today!
Kourtney is a passionate advocate for mindful eating and has a unique perspective on nutrition. She’s a wife and mom to 4 kids and comes from an agricultural background. Since growing up on the farm, Kourtney developed a love for food and how it brings people together from a young age.
After struggling with an eating disorder in high school, she felt very isolated. She eventually overcame her eating disorder and vowed never to let another woman feel the way that she did during that time. Kourtney now supports other rural women with their nutrition; she helps them break free from restrictive diets so they can have a balanced and fulfilling relationship with food. Food is meant to be something enjoyable, NOT something to fear!
Today’s topic is one we haven’t really covered here on the podcast: our relationship with food and how to successfully navigate it as we head into the holiday season. In today’s episode, Kourtney and I discuss the power of self-awareness and mindful eating.
It’s no secret that food greatly impacts us and basically every part of our lives – even more so during the holiday season! Kourtney shares 5 things to focus on that can help shift your mindset and beliefs around food.
She’s also giving tips on how to maintain a healthy relationship with food this holiday season, getting more curious about food and why it may be controlling your emotions, prioritizing your emotions and overall well-being (regardless of what your family or friends may bring up at holiday gatherings), and more.
Kourtney had a great deal of value to share in this episode, and I love that she is now taking both her struggle + her incredible knowledge to help others in rural communities. If you’re ready to improve your self-awareness and practice mindful eating as we head into this holiday season (or any time of the year), you will NOT want to miss this uplifting conversation!

More about the Good Movement Draws Good Movement podcast:
In stockmanship (the art and science of handling cattle in a safe, effective, low-stress manner), we have this phrase . . . good movement draws good movement.
It’s this thing that happens when we ask a small group of cattle, maybe a cow, or a pair to move out in a certain direction and their movement draws the whole herd into moving in the same direction.
Good movement happens when we approach the cattle with a positive attitude, read and really listen to what they’re telling us, and communicate accordingly.
We don’t approach the aware, flighty cattle the same as we do the tame, docile cattle. We adjust ourselves, our energy, and approach, and communicate with each differently.
These adjustments help us effectively draw good movement from each, which then draws good movement from the herd. But it starts with us.
The same is true for humans. Good movement starts with us.
Welcome to Good Movement Draws Good Movement, the podcast where farmers, ranchers, and rural folks can grow relationally through awareness, understanding, and effective communication.
Hey, it’s me – T. I’m your host, and I, along with my guests, will be covering topics related to drawing good movement – things like self and social awareness, brain science, positive psychology, extending grace, and so much more.
We’ll share tools that can help you understand why you are the way you are, why others are the way they are, and how you can use that to step out of self-told lies with grace and compassion to draw good movement in conversations, relationships, and life in rural America.
