Around this time last year, I was at the 2023 Enneagram cohort led by Suzanne Stabile. During the final meeting, Suzanne was teaching what she refers to as the four mantras: show up, pay attention, tell the truth, and don’t get attached to the results.
Recently, my son and I were out riding. He was fascinated with wild onions and even got off his horse to pick some! I was quick to tell him that we were “burning daylight” and we needed to get back to work. Right then, I was taken back to what Suzanne was talking about – having awareness and being present in the moment.
In today’s episode, I’m talking about reclaiming mindfulness and what it can look like when you’re “burning daylight” or missing the moment.
Children are naturally mindful; they live in the moment and are really in tune with what’s going on around them! But, somewhere along the way, that changes.
As adults, we gradually lose awareness and mindfulness; we tend to dismiss our kids’ curiosity and tell them to quit asking so many questions. Our culture thrives on productivity; we place it on a pedestal, and it’s valued way more than presence. We’re focused on doing instead of being, and we’ve been led to believe that rest is NOT productive – especially in agriculture.
Reclaiming mindfulness and getting back to a place of ‘present’ is possible, though – no more missing moments (no matter how big or small)! We can take pauses throughout our day, get in tune with our surroundings, and start getting curious again. Not only can we tap into our inner child, but we can connect more with our OWN children and really celebrate the special ways in which they see the world.
By reclaiming mindfulness and nurturing this in our own children, we can ensure that they keep their gifts + we’re reminded of the gifts we have, too. As kids, mindfulness allows us to see things in a new light and believe in the possibility of change; it’s time that we find our way back to that!
In this episode, Burning Daylight or Missing the Moment? Reclaiming Mindfulness, I cover:
- How kids are naturally mindful, curious, and present in the moment (and how this gradually changes as we become adults)
- Why we lose awareness and mindfulness as adults, and how this impacts our kids
- Ways to reclaim our awareness and mindfulness as adults
- How we can foster awareness and mindfulness in our kids

More about the Good Movement Draws Good Movement podcast:
In stockmanship (the art and science of handling cattle in a safe, effective, low-stress manner), we have this phrase . . . good movement draws good movement.
It’s this thing that happens when we ask a small group of cattle, maybe a cow or a pair, to move out in a certain direction, and their movement draws the whole herd into moving in the same direction.
Good movement happens when we approach the cattle with a positive attitude, read and really listen to what they’re telling us, and communicate accordingly.
We don’t approach the aware, flighty cattle the same as we do the tame, docile cattle. We adjust ourselves, our energy, and approach, and we communicate with each other differently.
These adjustments help us effectively draw good movement from each, which then draws good movement from the herd. But it starts with us.
The same is true for humans. Good movement starts with us.
Welcome to Good Movement Draws Good Movement, the podcast where farmers, ranchers, and rural folks can grow relationally through awareness, understanding, and effective communication.
Hey, it’s me – T. I’m your host, and I, along with my guests, will be covering topics related to drawing good movement – things like self and social awareness, brain science, positive psychology, extending grace, and so much more.
We’ll share tools that can help you understand why you are the way you are, why others are the way they are, and how you can use that to step out of self-told lies with grace and compassion to draw good movement in conversations, relationships, and life in rural America.
Tune in every Tuesday, and make sure to hit subscribe so you never miss an episode! Let’s go draw good movement!
