It’s been a while, but Tom and I are back for an episode together!

We wanted to share a bit of a life update with you here, especially since we’ve officially finished up our fall work and are preparing for winter.

In today’s episode, we’re talking about what burnout on the ranch looks like and how we’re learning to recover faster. This fall was tougher than usual, and it seemed to drag on and on – we both felt that way throughout the season!

We had quite a few new cows in our herd this year (shoutout to our one OG cow, Scarface). When we go through the process of shuffling our herds on the ranch, sometimes they have too much woe and not enough go (or vice versa). It can be tricky as we’re working with them and trying to get them to a place where they can best do things so everything flows smoothly.

Just like with humans, it’s never a one-size-fits-all, and it’s probably going to be the opposite of what you think will work!

We’re also chatting about winter projects we’re focusing on and what Tom’s experience with burnout has been like. Tom has gotten to a place where he recognizes not only his burnout but also the recovery that has to happen. Even with all of the craziness that went along with our fall work, we were able to work together on projects + resolve issues (as best as we could) when they came our way.

Burnout is incredibly real in this line of work, but it doesn’t have to be your reality forever. If you’ve been in a similar season with burnout on the ranch and are ready for recovery, or you’re simply looking forward to a slower time of year like we are, we hope this episode encourages you right where you need it!

In this episode, Burnout on the Ranch: How We’re Learning to Recover Faster with Tom, we cover:

  • The process of shuffling herds on the ranch + putting more woe back into the cows
  • Why what we think we need to do to slow down or stop cattle ends up being the opposite of that
  • Our upcoming winter projects
  • What burnout on the ranch has typically looked like for Tom + how we’ve worked together when certain projects weren’t going well this fall

More about the Good Movement Draws Good Movement podcast:

In stockmanship (the art and science of handling cattle in a safe, effective, low-stress manner), we have this phrase . . . good movement draws good movement.

It’s this thing that happens when we ask a small group of cattle, maybe a cow, or a pair to move out in a certain direction and their movement draws the whole herd into moving in the same direction.

Good movement happens when we approach the cattle with a positive attitude, read and really listen to what they’re telling us, and communicate accordingly.

We don’t approach the aware, flighty cattle the same as we do the tame, docile cattle. We adjust ourselves, our energy, and approach, and communicate with each differently.

These adjustments help us effectively draw good movement from each, which then draws good movement from the herd. But it starts with us.

The same is true for humans. Good movement starts with us.

Welcome to Good Movement Draws Good Movement, the podcast where farmers, ranchers, and rural folks can grow relationally through awareness, understanding, and effective communication.

Hey, it’s me – T. I’m your host, and I, along with my guests, will be covering topics related to drawing good movement – things like self and social awareness, brain science, positive psychology, extending grace, and so much more.

We’ll share tools that can help you understand why you are the way you are, why others are the way they are, and how you can use that to step out of self-told lies with grace and compassion to draw good movement in conversations, relationships, and life in rural America.

Tune in every Tuesday and make sure to hit subscribe so you never miss an episode! Let’s go draw good movement!
