Today’s episode covers the topic of self-care, which I think is often very misunderstood.

When it comes to self-care, you may think of splurging on luxurious spa days or fancy lattes, but that’s not what I’m talking about here. Self-care is not a “treat yo self” type of thing – it’s actually a necessity! It’s not about spoiling yourself or doing something extravagant every once in a while.

In today’s episode, I’m talking about the “treat yo self to maintain yourself” concept and what a new take on self-care can look like. Self-care is about meeting your basic needs and caring for the whole self – mind, body, and soul. Each of these parts needs optimal attention so you can show up fully in every aspect of your life.

The “treat yo self” narrative isn’t sustainable OR practical for most of us – especially in the rural and ag space! I know that talking about self-care is one thing, but implementing it (and doing so consistently) is another thing entirely. This doesn’t have to be a huge, time-consuming thing. Checking in with yourself regularly, setting boundaries, protecting your energy, and prioritizing rest are all great habits to work toward.

We tend to wear “busy” like a badge of honor and brag about the long, tiring hours we put in, day after day. This is doing way more harm than good – you’re not superhuman after all!

Self-care is NOT selfish – taking care of yourself is one of the least selfish things you can do. When you are well, you are more present, patient, and more capable of being the person that you want to be. And yes, this will positively impact your loved ones, too!

I believe it’s time to redefine self-care because it’s not an occasional luxury or indulgence. It’s a daily practice that allows you to tune into your mind, body, and soul and find small ways to honor yourself in these ways every single day.
I hope this episode provides you with a new take on self-care. No, you don’t need permission to take care of yourself. But if, for some reason, you still think you do, here’s your reminder to take care of yourself, friend!

In this episode, From Treat Yo Self to Maintain Yourself: A New Take on Self-Care, I cover:

  • What self-care and taking care of your “whole self” really is
  • Simple + practical ways to weave self-care into your daily life
  • Why self-care is NOT selfish

More about the Good Movement Draws Good Movement podcast:

In stockmanship (the art and science of handling cattle in a safe, effective, low-stress manner), we have this phrase . . . good movement draws good movement.

It’s this thing that happens when we ask a small group of cattle, maybe a cow, or a pair to move out in a certain direction and their movement draws the whole herd into moving in the same direction.

Good movement happens when we approach the cattle with a positive attitude, read and really listen to what they’re telling us, and communicate accordingly.

We don’t approach the aware, flighty cattle the same as we do the tame, docile cattle. We adjust ourselves, our energy, and approach, and communicate with each differently.

These adjustments help us effectively draw good movement from each, which then draws good movement from the herd. But it starts with us.

The same is true for humans. Good movement starts with us.

Welcome to Good Movement Draws Good Movement, the podcast where farmers, ranchers, and rural folks can grow relationally through awareness, understanding, and effective communication.

Hey, it’s me – T. I’m your host, and I, along with my guests, will be covering topics related to drawing good movement – things like self and social awareness, brain science, positive psychology, extending grace, and so much more.

We’ll share tools that can help you understand why you are the way you are, why others are the way they are, and how you can use that to step out of self-told lies with grace and compassion to draw good movement in conversations, relationships, and life in rural America.

Tune in every Tuesday and make sure to hit subscribe so you never miss an episode! Let’s go draw good movement!
