If you’re listening to this episode the day it goes live, it’s New Year’s Eve. That means tomorrow is not only a new day and new month but also a new YEAR!

There’s something I would love to see change in the new year, and I have for a while. In today’s episode, I’m talking about breaking the stigma and what redefining strength in rural communities looks like.

As someone who grew up in rural America (and is still there), I’m very familiar with the mindset that comes along with this way of life. We’re raised to keep our emotions to ourselves, work hard, and push through, no matter WHAT. Talking about our feelings and emotions is unnecessary and makes us look weak.

We’re experts at managing our land, livestock, and all of the wonderful things God has entrusted us to care for on our farms, ranches, and businesses. We celebrate hard work and love to brag about how long it’s been since we’ve taken time off (yes, I’ve witnessed plenty of these types of conversations).

But honestly, where has any of this gotten us? Many of us struggle silently with the weight of stress and expectations. We may think bottling up our emotions and ignoring our mental well-being is normal, but it’s not natural! It’s also not doing us any favors because, like it or not, these suppressed emotions WILL come out (and usually, not in a beneficial way).

Fortunately, we can take simple steps toward breaking this stigma and redefining what strength looks like in our rural communities. I’m all for a collective resolution that will focus on supporting our mental health and well-being and building resilient communities with thriving families!

Rural life is FAR from easy, but we are stronger together. It’s time for us to commit to taking care of ourselves and each other – not just our land and livestock. If you’re ready for deeper, personalized support to help you do just that, I would be honored to partner with you in my 1:1 Good Movement Guidance!

Thank you for being on this journey with me – here’s to a new year filled with healing, connection, and, of course, plenty of good movement!

In this episode, Breaking the Stigma: Redefining Strength in Rural Communities, I cover:

  • The typical mindset that’s often ingrained in us in rural America
  • What happens when we bottle up our emotions and ignore our mental well-being
  • The collective resolution I want us to make in the new year
  • Simple ways for us to begin breaking the stigma together

More about the Good Movement Draws Good Movement podcast:

In stockmanship (the art and science of handling cattle in a safe, effective, low-stress manner), we have this phrase . . . good movement draws good movement.

It’s this thing that happens when we ask a small group of cattle, maybe a cow or a pair, to move out in a certain direction, and their movement draws the whole herd into moving in the same direction.

Good movement happens when we approach the cattle with a positive attitude, read and really listen to what they’re telling us, and communicate accordingly.

We don’t approach the aware, flighty cattle the same as we do the tame, docile cattle. We adjust ourselves, our energy, and our approach, and we communicate with each other differently.

These adjustments help us effectively draw good movement from each, which then draws good movement from the herd. But it starts with us.

The same is true for humans. Good movement starts with us.

Welcome to Good Movement Draws Good Movement, the podcast where farmers, ranchers, and rural folks can grow relationally through awareness, understanding, and effective communication.

Hey, it’s me – T. I’m your host, and I, along with my guests, will be covering topics related to drawing good movement – things like self and social awareness, brain science, positive psychology, extending grace, and so much more.

We’ll share tools that can help you understand why you are the way you are, why others are the way they are, and how you can use that to step out of self-told lies with grace and compassion to draw good movement in conversations, relationships, and life in rural America.

Tune in every Tuesday, and make sure to hit subscribe so you never miss an episode! Let’s go draw good movement!
