You may already know this, but I’m a HUGE Ted Lasso fan. I was ridiculously excited to find out that Ted Lasso was recently renewed for a fourth season!

While this show is comical (with adult storylines and language), it goes way beyond that. It hits on some difficult human topics that we deal with in everyday life, and Ted (as well as everyone in the show) nails the emotional complexity of being human. One episode in particular sparked something that I want to dive into here.

In today’s episode, I’m talking about a lesson from Ted Lasso on healing and holding two things at once. As humans, we REALLY struggle with duality in our culture. We’ve been conditioned to think that everything is either/or and not ever both/and.

This is especially true with emotions because we’re taught that we should only experience one emotion at a time. The truth is, it’s just NOT that simple.

This specific Ted Lasso episode shows how we can experience a variety of emotions at once. For example, it’s okay to feel both gratitude and anger for someone (even if it feels strange at first).

It’s crucial that you don’t suppress your emotions, even when they feel uncomfortable. Those suppressed emotions won’t just magically disappear!

One of my favorite ways to work through this is using the “f- you and thank you” exercise (journaling has really helped me vs. speaking out loud). It’s been incredibly helpful for me, and I have a feeling it will be for you, too!

If you’re ready to learn more about this exercise and other tools OR you’re in need of someone to walk with you on your healing journey, I would love to support you in this way. You can join me and other amazing women in rural America in my 1:1 Good Movement Guidance – we’re all healing and learning together!

In this episode, A Lesson From Ted Lasso on Healing and Holding Two Things at Once, I cover:

  • Why humans struggle with duality in our culture – especially with emotions
  • Understanding that suppressed emotions don’t just disappear
  • Personal examples of how I’ve felt both “f- you” and “thank you” emotions
  • How to use the “f- you and thank you” exercise in your own life

More about the Good Movement Draws Good Movement podcast:

In stockmanship (the art and science of handling cattle in a safe, effective, low-stress manner), we have this phrase . . . good movement draws good movement.

It’s this thing that happens when we ask a small group of cattle, maybe a cow, or a pair to move out in a certain direction and their movement draws the whole herd into moving in the same direction.

Good movement happens when we approach the cattle with a positive attitude, read and really listen to what they’re telling us, and communicate accordingly.

We don’t approach the aware, flighty cattle the same as we do the tame, docile cattle. We adjust ourselves, our energy, and approach, and communicate with each differently.

These adjustments help us effectively draw good movement from each, which then draws good movement from the herd. But it starts with us.

The same is true for humans. Good movement starts with us.

Welcome to Good Movement Draws Good Movement, the podcast where farmers, ranchers, and rural folks can grow relationally through awareness, understanding, and effective communication.

Hey, it’s me – T. I’m your host, and I, along with my guests, will be covering topics related to drawing good movement – things like self and social awareness, brain science, positive psychology, extending grace, and so much more.

We’ll share tools that can help you understand why you are the way you are, why others are the way they are, and how you can use that to step out of self-told lies with grace and compassion to draw good movement in conversations, relationships, and life in rural America.

Tune in every Tuesday and make sure to hit subscribe so you never miss an episode! Let’s go draw good movement!
