“Pain isn’t a bug; it’s a feature.” I first heard this quote from grief expert David Kessler on the Dr. John Deloney Show (give it a listen HERE if you want to check it out). This particular phrase hit me, and it really stuck with me.

While I don’t love that pain is a feature of life, it’s in our lives for a reason, and it can provide valuable lessons. I’ve definitely experienced it in my own life, and it’s even spoken about in the Bible, so yeah… there’s no getting around having pain in this world!

In today’s episode, I’m talking about the gift of pain and why we should stop ignoring it. Pain is not an anomaly – it’s not meant to be shoved down or something we need to fix. Pain draws our attention to something so we can learn what’s going on; it’s an invitation for us to grow because it shows us what needs more focus and attention!

When we ignore pain and the signals it sends us, it’s not going to magically disappear (trust me – I know all too well it doesn’t work like that). Think of pain like a low-battery notification on your phone. It’s not a glitch but a feature that alerts us to something that NEEDS our attention. If we continue ignoring the signals from pain, we’re not able to get to the root cause of what’s causing it. Ultimately, we won’t be able to heal and move forward with our lives.

Whether it’s resilience, empathy, or discovering what really matters to you, there IS opportunity in pain. While it may feel difficult at first, there are ways to engage with pain. From acknowledging it’s there and taking a pause to sit with it to connecting with others in our lives and opening up about the pain we’re experiencing, all of these can be incredibly beneficial.

The gift of pain is just that – it’s a gift! And the good news is we can break the cycle of shoving down and ignoring our pain. It’s time that we stop being afraid of what it’s showing us and, instead, choose curiosity. On the other side of learning from and walking through our pain lies understanding, healing, joy, and SO much more!

In this episode, The Gift of Pain: Why We Should Stop Ignoring It, I cover:

  • Changing how we view pain and its purpose for us
  • What can happen when we ignore pain and the signals it sends us
  • My experience with a major pain point in my own life
  • Practical ways to engage with pain
  • Getting curious on where pain is showing up in your life

More about the Good Movement Draws Good Movement podcast:

In stockmanship (the art and science of handling cattle in a safe, effective, low-stress manner), we have this phrase . . . good movement draws good movement.

It’s this thing that happens when we ask a small group of cattle, maybe a cow, or a pair to move out in a certain direction and their movement draws the whole herd into moving in the same direction.

Good movement happens when we approach the cattle with a positive attitude, read and really listen to what they’re telling us, and communicate accordingly.

We don’t approach the aware, flighty cattle the same as we do the tame, docile cattle. We adjust ourselves, our energy, and approach, and communicate with each differently.

These adjustments help us effectively draw good movement from each, which then draws good movement from the herd. But it starts with us.

The same is true for humans. Good movement starts with us.

Welcome to Good Movement Draws Good Movement, the podcast where farmers, ranchers, and rural folks can grow relationally through awareness, understanding, and effective communication.

Hey, it’s me – T. I’m your host, and I, along with my guests, will be covering topics related to drawing good movement – things like self and social awareness, brain science, positive psychology, extending grace, and so much more.

We’ll share tools that can help you understand why you are the way you are, why others are the way they are, and how you can use that to step out of self-told lies with grace and compassion to draw good movement in conversations, relationships, and life in rural America.

Tune in every Tuesday and make sure to hit subscribe so you never miss an episode! Let’s go draw good movement!
