Have you ever seen something, or even had someone tell you something that, well.. completely blows your mind? I had this happen recently (and in a couple of different ways actually), so I knew I needed to share about it on the podcast! During one of my recent therapy sessions, my wise friend, Jada, told me that ‘you are unable to feel joy, because you have been numbing all of your other emotions. When you numb all of your other emotions, you can’t feel happiness and joy to the fullest, because you can’t numb one and not numb the others’. I saw a similar concept shared on my Instagram feed from Quinlan Walther (her account is linked below if you want to check it out), and after sharing to my own page, I quickly realized that many others were feeling kind of mind-blown too.

In today’s episode, I want to dig into my mind-blowing realization about emotions. When it comes to emotions, we must understand that emotions themselves are not the problem, but rather, our resistance to actually feeling them is. Emotions are very much like riding a roller coaster too (which my good friend Sheila shared here on the podcast); we can’t continually numb anger, fear, and sadness, yet still expect to fully feel emotions like happiness and joy. It may be difficult to hear, but ‘selectively’ numbing emotions just isn’t possible!

I hope this episode leaves you with a ‘light bulb’ moment – especially if you’re someone who is used to numbing certain emotions (yep, that used to be me). If this rings true for you, I really want you to get curious as to why you’re doing so. Instead of numbing, take time to recognize, feel, and accept your emotion(s), and then get ready to bring joy and happiness into your life in a BOLD, new way!

In this episode, My Mind-Blowing Realization About Emotions, we cover:

  • Understanding that our emotions themselves are not the problem, but instead, our resistance to emotions is
  • Realizing that we can’t numb emotions like fear, anger, and sadness, and still expect to feel happiness, joy, and love to the fullest

More about the Good Movement Draws Good Movement podcast:

In stockmanship (the art and science of handling cattle in a safe, effective, low-stress manner), we have this phrase . . . good movement draws good movement.

It’s this thing that happens when we ask a small group of cattle, maybe a cow, or a pair to move out in a certain direction and their movement draws the whole herd into moving in the same direction.

Good movement happens when we approach the cattle with a positive attitude, read and really listen to what they’re telling us, and communicate accordingly.

We don’t approach the aware, flighty cattle the same as we do the tame, docile cattle. We adjust ourselves, our energy, and approach, and communicate with each differently.

These adjustments help us effectively draw good movement from each, which then draws good movement from the herd. But it starts with us.

The same is true for humans. Good movement starts with us.

Welcome to Good Movement Draws Good Movement, the podcast where farmers, ranchers, and rural folks can grow relationally through awareness, understanding, and effective communication.

Hey, it’s me – T. I’m your host, and I, along with my guests, will be covering topics related to drawing good movement – things like self and social awareness, brain science, positive psychology, extending grace, and so much more.

We’ll share tools that can help you understand why you are the way you are, why others are the way they are, and how you can use that to step out of self-told lies with grace and compassion to draw good movement in conversations, relationships, and life in rural America.

Tune in every Tuesday and make sure to hit subscribe so you never miss an episode! Let’s go draw good movement!
