In rural life, independence often feels like a badge of honor. We’re used to doing and figuring things out on our own, pushing through, and staying strong, no matter WHAT.

Our grit is something to be proud of because we are capable of so much!

But when it comes to our inner world (our emotions, relationships, and mental well-being), that go-it-alone mindset can wear us down quickly. We don’t always notice the toll it takes until the wheels start to fall off.

In today’s episode, I’m talking about self-reliance vs. connection and what actually helps us heal. So many of us were raised to believe that needing help is a weakness or that slowing down to feel our emotions makes us soft.

But the truth is, we are literally WIRED for connection from the moment we begin developing in the womb! That need doesn’t disappear with age either – it evolves and remains essential to our healing and growth.

Healing in isolation might feel safe, but true transformation happens in connection, especially when we have someone to walk beside us. Community gives us the courage to stay with the hard stuff and is what actually helps us heal.

If you’re craving this kind of support, the Good Movement Collective is now open for its third round. This is a space to be seen, supported, and reminded that you’re NOT the only one navigating the challenges of rural life. I’d love to support you on this journey of healing & growing together!

In this episode, Self-Reliance vs. Connection: What Actually Helps Us Heal, I cover:

  • Realizing that just because we can carry it alone doesn’t mean we should
  • Why we’re designed for connection as humans & need relationships with others
  • Working through the hard stuff in life instead of continuously shoving it down
  • Reflections you can start now to support your healing & inner work

More about the Good Movement Draws Good Movement podcast:

In stockmanship (the art and science of handling cattle in a safe, effective, low-stress manner), we have this phrase . . . good movement draws good movement.

It’s this thing that happens when we ask a small group of cattle, maybe a cow, or a pair to move out in a certain direction and their movement draws the whole herd into moving in the same direction.

Good movement happens when we approach the cattle with a positive attitude, read and really listen to what they’re telling us, and communicate accordingly.

We don’t approach the aware, flighty cattle the same as we do the tame, docile cattle. We adjust ourselves, our energy, and approach, and communicate with each differently.

These adjustments help us effectively draw good movement from each, which then draws good movement from the herd. But it starts with us.

The same is true for humans. Good movement starts with us.

Welcome to Good Movement Draws Good Movement, the podcast where farmers, ranchers, and rural folks can grow relationally through awareness, understanding, and effective communication.

Hey, it’s me – T. I’m your host, and I, along with my guests, will be covering topics related to drawing good movement – things like self and social awareness, brain science, positive psychology, extending grace, and so much more.

We’ll share tools that can help you understand why you are the way you are, why others are the way they are, and how you can use that to step out of self-told lies with grace and compassion to draw good movement in conversations, relationships, and life in rural America.

Tune in every Tuesday and make sure to hit subscribe so you never miss an episode! Let’s go draw good movement!
