Well…cue Rod Stewart, because I do wish that I knew what I know now when I was younger! In my recent episode about attachment and attunement (episode 38), I kind of left you hangin’ when I said I would have done some things differently – especially with parenting. After receiving some questions about what specifically I would have done differently, I wanted to dive into just that in today’s episode. I know this is information that you will not only benefit from, but will very likely resonate with too, regardless of where you are on your parenting journey.

In today’s episode, I want to talk about what I would do differently in parenting if I had to do it over again, and how the attachment piece comes into play here. When we first started our family, my work looked pretty different, and I was gone for a good part of the day. I truly loved what I did, but I was very adamant about sleep (like making sure I was getting enough), so implementing a strict sleep schedule with my babies was a high priority. Back then, I had no idea how important attachment and attunement were (especially since these start for us as tiny babies), nor did I think I needed to seek help and ‘fill the holes’ in my own attachment brain as I was on a healing journey. I’m a littttle salty about that now, because I have learned and evolved a lot since then!

For the majority of us, we’re really just doing the best we can with what we have and where we are as parents. None of us are without flaws though, and none of us will get away without experiencing some type of trauma or adversity in this life. Attachment is the incredibly important foundation, and fortunately, we can fill those holes in our attachment brain if we have them – we just have to be willing to do the work that allows us to heal. We WILL continue talking about all of this, because it’s too important not to!

In this episode, What I Would Do Differently in Parenting if I Had It to Do Over Again, I cover:

  • What my work and life looked like when I became a mom
  • Seeking help on my own healing journey and ‘filling the holes’ that I had in my attachment brain
  • My thoughts on the sleep schedule/sleep training I implemented with my kids as babies, and if I would do anything differently now
  • Realizing that we are ALL imperfect humans, and none of us are exempt from pain or adversity in this life

More about the Good Movement Draws Good Movement podcast:

In stockmanship (the art and science of handling cattle in a safe, effective, low-stress manner), we have this phrase . . . good movement draws good movement.

It’s this thing that happens when we ask a small group of cattle, maybe a cow, or a pair to move out in a certain direction and their movement draws the whole herd into moving in the same direction.

Good movement happens when we approach the cattle with a positive attitude, read and really listen to what they’re telling us, and communicate accordingly.

We don’t approach the aware, flighty cattle the same as we do the tame, docile cattle. We adjust ourselves, our energy, and approach, and communicate with each differently.

These adjustments help us effectively draw good movement from each, which then draws good movement from the herd. But it starts with us.

The same is true for humans. Good movement starts with us.

Welcome to Good Movement Draws Good Movement, the podcast where farmers, ranchers, and rural folks can grow relationally through awareness, understanding, and effective communication.

Hey, it’s me – T. I’m your host, and I, along with my guests, will be covering topics related to drawing good movement – things like self and social awareness, brain science, positive psychology, extending grace, and so much more.

We’ll share tools that can help you understand why you are the way you are, why others are the way they are, and how you can use that to step out of self-told lies with grace and compassion to draw good movement in conversations, relationships, and life in rural America.

Tune in every Tuesday and make sure to hit subscribe so you never miss an episode! Let’s go draw good movement!
