In the span of just a few weeks, everything has changed.

After already facing the devastation of the Mullen Fire here in Nebraska, another fire (known as the Ashby Fire) ignited in the middle of the night and moved quickly. What started as uncertainty turned into urgency as winds shifted and pushed flames toward home.

Evacuation decisions had to be made FAST. In the middle of it all, there was this quiet, steady hope. Thankfully, our home was spared, our animals are safe, and the overwhelming support from the community showed up in ways that are hard to really put into words.

In today’s episode, I’m talking about what it feels like when “it” hits you like a ton of bricks. While everything looks okay right now, that’s not truly the case. The work continues because life keeps moving.

What I’m really worried about is what will happen when things finally slow down, and everyone’s nervous systems are no longer in survival mode.

I’ve experienced this firsthand (which started in 2020) when I wasn’t able to fully feel everything. It became even clearer in 2023 when I lost my dad that I could NOT carry this load alone.

Whether you’ve lived through something as visible as a wildfire, or something quieter (but still very heavy), you are NOT meant to go at it alone, friend. There is zero shame in asking for help, and honestly, it might be one of the most important things you can do for yourself + those around you!

In this episode, When It Hits You Like a Ton of Bricks, I cover:

  • How the Ashby Fire started suddenly and moved fast + how close it came to our home
  • My gratitude for the safety of our home, animals, first responders & community
  • How we’re still in survival mode, even though things may “look” okay
  • Why trauma doesn’t always hit in the moment
  • My experience with anxiety and physical symptoms
  • Tools I used to start my healing journey in 2020
  • Why I knew I couldn’t carry everything alone & chose to seek support after losing my dad in 2023
  • Understanding there is zero shame in asking for help because we’re NOT meant to do this alone

More about the Good Movement Draws Good Movement podcast:

In stockmanship (the art and science of handling cattle in a safe, effective, low-stress manner), we have this phrase . . . good movement draws good movement.

It’s this thing that happens when we ask a small group of cattle, maybe a cow or a pair, to move out in a certain direction, and their movement draws the whole herd into moving in the same direction.

Good movement happens when we approach the cattle with a positive attitude, read and really listen to what they’re telling us, and communicate accordingly.

We don’t approach the aware, flighty cattle the same as we do the tame, docile cattle. We adjust ourselves, our energy, and our approach, and we communicate with each other differently.

These adjustments help us effectively draw good movement from each, which then draws good movement from the herd. But it starts with us.

The same is true for humans. Good movement starts with us.

Welcome to Good Movement Draws Good Movement, the podcast where farmers, ranchers, and rural folks can grow relationally through awareness, understanding, and effective communication.

Hey, it’s me – T. I’m your host, and I, along with my guests, will be covering topics related to drawing good movement – things like self and social awareness, brain science, positive psychology, extending grace, and so much more.

We’ll share tools that can help you understand why you are the way you are, why others are the way they are, and how you can use that to step out of self-told lies with grace and compassion to draw good movement in conversations, relationships, and life in rural America.

Tune in every Tuesday, and make sure to hit subscribe so you never miss an episode! Let’s go draw good movement!
